EDUC 505 Introduction to Educational Research
This course introduces candidates to the principles, processes, and ethical dimensions of educational research. The course examines qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches to inquiry, with an emphasis on critically evaluating existing research and developing original research questions. Students explore how research informs educational policy and practice, and how educators can use systematic inquiry to investigate issues of teaching, learning, and equity. By the end of the course, candidates will be prepared to engage in independent scholarly investigation leading into the thesis sequence. The purpose of this course is to prepare graduate students to engage in educational research as a form of disciplined inquiry. Candidates will develop the ability to critically interpret research, evaluate methodological approaches, and design meaningful research questions grounded in educational problems. Emphasis is placed on understanding research as both a technical process and an ethical responsibility, particularly in relation to issues of equity and representation. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to initiate independent research that contributes to the improvement of educational practice and systems. Course meets online. Offered in Fall.
