EDUC 503 Inclusive Teaching & UDL
This course examines the principles and practices of inclusive education through the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The course emphasizes the design of flexible learning environments that respond to learner variability, promote access, and foster meaningful engagement for all students. Through scholarly reading, case analysis, and applied design work, candidates explore how classroom structures, instructional materials, and assessment practices can either create or remove barriers to participation. The course connects theory to practice, preparing students to develop inclusive learning environments that are equitable, responsive, and grounded in research. The purpose of this course is to prepare graduate students to design learning environments that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to learner variability. Candidates will examine how instructional decisions—both visible and implicit—shape access to learning, and they will analyze how barriers are produced within classroom structures, materials, and assessments. Emphasis is placed on developing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to proactively design for inclusion, rather than retroactively accommodate difference. Through the application of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), students will cultivate the ability to create flexible, accessible, and meaningful learning experiences for all students. Matriculation in the Master of Arts in Teaching or Master of Education degree program.
