Creative Writing Major Requirements

*PLEASE NOTE: The English major, Creative Writing major, and English with an Emphasis in Writing major have changed, beginning in AY ’20 – ’21. Faculty advisors will work with Class of 2021, 2022, 2023 graduates to determine equivalencies with the former English, Creative Writing, and English with an Emphasis in Writing majors.

Minimum of 14 courses, distributed as follows:

One gateway course

ENGL 220

Intro to Textual Analysis & Criticism

*Creative Writing majors must take this course within one semester of declaring their major.

Two foundational courses in literary antecedents

ENGL 230	Thematic Survey of British Literature	3
ENGL 270	Thematic Survey of American Literature	3

Three 300 level courses from two of three categories (A, C, and G)

Cultural emphasis, Author emphasis, and Genre emphasis

*Any one 300/400-level course can fulfill only one of the open 300/400-level course requirements (i.e., an “Author emphasis” course cannot also fulfill a “Genre emphasis” course requirement; a “Culture emphasis” course cannot also fulfill an “Author emphasis” course requirement).

One additional course at or above the 200 level

Five Creative Writing courses as sequenced:
