MUSI 282 Vernacular Music

A student-centered music-making class designed to explore learning theories and philosophies related to vernacular music experiences. Students will discover pedagogical techniques and performance practices of contemporary and emerging instruments reflective of the current vernacular music community. Students will explore culture and heritage, differentiated learning processes, communication, motivation, and advocacy as stakeholders, adaptations for students with disabilities, differentiated instruction, self-analysis and reflection of self- and peer-guided musicking opportunities, and will also navigate citizenship in a democracy via a constructivist approach. This course is designed to serve as a means to update knowledge of and skills in emerging trends in vernacular instruments and musicking. Students will learn how to research and discover these emerging musicking spaces. Potential instruments include but are not limited to ukulele, steel pans, and bucket drumming. Prior music experience is preferred but not required. A mandatory 5-hours of guided field experience related to school and community visits will help students develop an understanding of the local community and service opportunities. This course is open to majors and non-majors.
