HIST 124 US History II, 1877-Present

This course offers an overview and analysis of U.S. history since 1877. It focuses on the era's three defining features: the social and economic transformations wrought by industrialization; the rise and fall of the New Deal order; and struggles over lines of inclusion, identity, and citizenship. The course also charts the country’s changing role in the world, as it grew from a regional power to a global colossus over the course of the century, exploring how this growing global role helped shape American politics, society, and culture at home. To make sense of this past, we will consult academic works of history as well as a variety of historical sources including journalism, speeches, oral histories, memoirs, films, and television programs.
