ARTH 280 Topics in Buddhist Art
This course traces the development of Buddhist art and architecture in more or less the order in which it spread from its inception in the 6th century BCE in India through the rest of Asia and beyond to the present day, with particular attention paid to the ways in which pre-existing religions and political systems influenced the representation of Buddhism. The emphasis is on the painting, sculpture, and sacred architecture of India, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Himalayas, and beyond. Offered every other year.
