NURS 446 Transition Into Professional Practice I: Health Policy

Explores the role of the nurse as manager of care, clinical leader, and patient, public, and professional advocate. Management and leadership theories, principles, and skills are presented as a guide to skillfully managing care and care teams at the "bedside" and in the boardroom. Skill in presenting oneself as a member of the profession and scientific community is applied. Nursing history, roles, professional trends and issues are explored as a foundation to active engagement in the political process and public advocacy. Students appraise issues relevant to professional practice, research current advocacy efforts and policy solutions, and actively engage in the political process in and outside of the classroom. Offered in the January Term for pre-licensure students senior nursing students only and in the spring for RN-BS students.

Prerequisite

Traditional students: All 100, 200, 300 level Nursing courses, SCIE 301 and SCIE 302 AND at least one senior level clinical course. RN-BS students: NURS 261, NURS 448.
