2023-2024 College Catalog

Repeating a Course

For the purpose of acquiring additional knowledge and enhancing their grades, students are permitted to retake any course. However, if a course has already been successfully completed and credit has been awarded, retaking it will not contribute to the overall credits completed for graduation.

In cases where a course is repeated at Hartwick College, the higher grade achieved will be used in the calculation of the grade point average. Conversely, for courses repeated at external institutions, provided they are eligible for transfer credits and the previous attempt at Hartwick resulted in a grade of C- or lower, the original Hartwick grade will not be factored into the student's grade point average. Similarly, the transfer grade will also not be considered in the grade point average; instead, the student will solely receive credit for the transferred course, as opposed to the corresponding Hartwick course. Regardless of the scenario, the repeated course will continue to be reflected on the student's official transcript.

Students must bear in mind that repeating a course in which they previously earned a letter grade, excluding 'F,' may have implications on their eligibility for state and/or federal financial aid. Therefore, students intending to repeat a course are advised to consult with the Office of Student Accounts or Financial Aid prior to making a decision.

To ensure accurate record-keeping, students are responsible for providing written notification to the Office of the Registrar when repeating a course.
