SOCI 180 Religion and Society

This course examines religious practices, customs, beliefs, and rituals in the context of social structures and movements. Religion exists in a social context, and always is shaped by and shapes its social environment. It is one of the most powerful forces of social cohesion, establishing and maintaining order, giving meaning, and initiating and influencing changes in societies. Students will be introduced to the basic concepts, theories, and the methods used to study religion and society. This will include attention to the meaning of religion as a complex phenomenon, the roles religion plays in society, the internal complexities of religious systems, and the implications of secularization and globalization for religious communities.
