MUSI 242 Music Theory IV
This course primarily concentrates on the music of the 20th century. It begins with an introduction to late 19th century harmonic practices, and then turns its full attention to the rich and broad array of analytical and compositional features found in 20th century music. Analytical and compositional projects, undertaken in individual and small student groups, are structured toward various 20th century music practices. Instruction will be integrated with music technologies. This will serve: (1) as a means to complement and enhance student learning about music theory, and (2) as an introduction to the extraordinarily wide range of technological applications to composition, improvisation, and music education in general. This is the continuation of a foundational block of courses designed to provide students a sufficient knowledge base in theory and aural skills. Offered every Spring Term.
