ENGL 325 The British Novel I
A study of the evolution of this "novel" form of literary expression, from its emergence in England in the 18th century to its development as the paramount literary genre in the 19th. While focusing on the salient features of the genre, the course also will consider the historical and cultural influences that shaped the works of novelists such as Defoe, Fielding, Sterne, Mary Shelley, Austen, the Brontës, and Dickens.
