ART 344 Photojournalism
An introduction to the practice of modern digital photojournalism, this course emphasizes the techniques necessary for visual storytelling, including artistic skills (composition, lighting, narrative) and technical skills (camera use, timing, software). In weekly assignments covering spot news, general news, features, sports, portraits, photo illustration and the photo essay, students will practice all stages of photo reportage: story planning, shooting, editing and digital imaging. $100 Lab Fee plus materials (USB drive, external hard drive, SD cards). Students may use lab computers and also choose to purchase Lightroom and Photoshop software at student rates for their own laptops. While it is best to own a DSLR camera, the department has “loaners” for all who require equipment. Offered alternate years. (EL, GEO2) Prerequisite: ART 343 or Permission of the Instructor.
